Subject: Testimony Submission: Support for the Hawaii County Band (May 2041)'
Dear council members and citizens,
Why do the people of Hawaii constantly need to remind its leaders of what matters? It seems like as
soon as there's understanding, another attack comes, and another. Music is not a 'frill' or a 'luxury' but a
critical part of what life is. It is a gift that we have received from those who went before and that we can
share with those that come after. I am not blind to the economic situation. Having run a business in Hilo
for several years, I am no stranger to what's happening. Even with that knowledge, I will always support
the Hawaii County Band. There are so many reasons to do so (historical, educational, other options,
etc.), which I imagine you've heard each time the issue arises, that there's therefore little need for me to
repeat them. As an educator, I have studied the refocus on things that the government has decided to
prioritize and I see first hand the effect that the loss of music is having on our youth and culture. There's
no price you can put to that, no dollar amount you can measure out or weigh. In our culture and history
lie our future and the future of our children. Don't make this mistake, ever. Give all possible support to
the Hawaii County Band, and do so for all perpetuity.
With all possible concern,
Todd Ozawa
