HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0111.061 2010-2012 PICoUPJCIL TESTIMONY: IN SUPPORT OF FUNDING FOR THE HAWAII COUNTY AND r Hawaii County Council Meeting r3 2 1 .2 May 18, 2011 MOWJ.. kIO Hawaii County Building in Hilo 0 Dear Hawaii County Council Members: I am writing to express my strong support for maintaining funding for the Hawaii County Band in which a budget amendment was introduced by Councilwoman Brenda Ford in Comm.111.22, Memorandum No. 6, dated May 9, 2011 to defend the band again. Supporters of the band were very pleased last year when funding was placed back into the budget for the band after an outpouring of community support, obtained through grassroots efforts, was so profoundly demonstrated at the March 22, 2010 Hawaii County Council meeting in Hilo. As most of you probably recall, there were 60 testifiers that provided unanimous support for over 3 hours of deeply emotional testimony, and not a single testimony was given against funding the band that I can recall! I organized the gathering of 4,006 hand written signatures and submitted that in my testimony that evening. I would like to update that figure to include 266 more names that came in to me immediately after the March 22, 2010 meeting (enclosed) for a total of 4,272 hand written signatures from supporters. Another band supporter submitted testimony last year having just over 6,000 electronic signatures from people both statewide and abroad in support of the band. And that number to date stands at 6,405 electronic signatures from those supporters. Many visitors to the Big Island strongly support the band as they see it as an icon for Hawaii's Aloha Spirit. It is something that we can and should be proud of and we should not let a temporary tough economic situation make us lose sight of what is important in our community. The band has a long and rich history and tradition dating back 128 years during the times of the Royal Hawaiian Monarchy. Our rich heritage and cultural ties from the past must not be severed under any circumstances because once it is cut, it will be gone forever. I believe that the bad economic times will pass with good leadership, and if the band is lost in our desperate attempts to develop a contentious balanced budget at best, when times are better, we will look back and ask ourselves, "Did we really have to sacrifice the band ?" And supporters and the community that have enjoyed the beautiful music created by the good hearts and souls of this high caliber group of professionals will be truly saddened to have lost yet 1 Comm. No. // • G Ref. to Pr G khei / Ref. Date MAY 18 ZOW TESTIMONY: IN SUPPORT OF FUNDING FOR THE HAWAII COUNTY BAND Hawaii County Council Meeting May 18, 2011 Hawaii County Building in Hilo another symbol of who we are as a local Hawaiian society. Please look beyond this year's difficult budget into the future and I hope that you will visualize a future that will be better for us all, and one that will still see and hear the band playing on. We had hoped that our message of support last year was strong, clear and unequivocal so that this issue would not arise again. We ask that you please think about the will of the people that you are responsible to represent, and consider our overwhelming evidence of that tremendous community support. Please keep funding for the band!
