Attention: Testimonies
As a taxpaying citizen of the County of Hawaii I would like to have the opportunity to express my view
regarding the Plastic Bag Issue. A simple solution would be to offer three types of packaging:
1. Paper Bag
2. A Bio Bag that appears plastic with handles but is made of natural biodegradable products.
3. A cardboard box recycled from the store (i.e. Boxes in which the store received
merchandise)
In the event that merchants complain that the cost of Bio Bags is too much, simply pass the cost along to the
customer who demands it. In other words, paper bags and recycled boxes could be free and if a customer
demands a bio bag the cashier could charge the appropriate compensation (what would this be .05 cents ?) per
bag.
Also, merchants could continue to allow customers to bring their own recyclable cloth bags, with perhaps no
compensation of .03 to .05 cents per bag, as is happening now, since they would no longer be "saving" aplastic
bag. These recyclable cloth bags add a fourth alternative to Plastic.
Plastic Bags will never be recycled at a rate to help the environment. It isn't hasn't happened thus far and it will
never happen. Realistic minds are needed to reach sound decision on this very solvable issue for the good of
our landfills.
