Subject: Plese vote NO on the plastic bag ban!
Dear Councilwoman Ford,
I am a consumer living in Hilo.
I strongly oppose the proposed ban on plastic bags in Hawaii County.
*A ban on plastic bags has been shown in all cases to increase their use, not decrease it, and so this merely
causes more problems in that consumers have to purchase and provide bring their own plastic bags.
*A ban on plastic bags in unconstitutional, and will be overthrown because there has been no Environmental
Impact Statement.
* Plastic bags are essential to commerce and shopping in this area, which is very rainy and wet.
* Plastic bags are environmentally the best option and have the least environmental impact.
* Hawaii is not the cause or the source of the plastic waste found in deep ocean waters -- that is a product of
Asians nations that have inadequate waste - disposal and recycling provisions.
* Plastic is the most recyclable material for bags, and is recyclable into important products such as
rechargeable cell phone batteries.
In short, a ban on plastic bags is not the solution to anything, and is moreover a huge problem in the making.
