Subject: We Support a Ban on Plastic Bags for Hawaii County
Aloha,
I am writing to encourage you to join Maui county, Kauai county, and dozens of other cities across the
country in supporting Bill 17 to ban single -use plastic bags on Hawaii Island. While I appreciate your
council's efforts in the past, the time has passed for caving to corporate interests or false arguments
about personal liberty. Single -use plastic bags are one of the major sources of plastic pollution on the
planet, contributing to the declines in marine life and seabirds across the Pacific.
They also contribute to climate change. Every year Americans use and discard over 100 billion plastic
bags, the equivalent of 12 million barrels of oil. It is a waste of energy and source of pollution that has
no rationale for existence outside of convenience. And, for those concerned about their personal
freedoms, Bill 17 places no restrictions on anyone who chooses to buy their own plastic bags for their
personal shopping use.
Hawaii Island is known for its unique environments and natural beauty, and for its communities'
commitment to more sustainable practices. I ask that you continue this tradition by remembering the
past while considering the future: before the 1980s, businesses and customers did just fine using paper
or their own bags; and today, over 25% of the world has steeped forward to ban plastic bags.
Global issues like climate change and plastic pollution demand action at the local level. Please support
the plastic bag ban on February 16th and do your small part to make a big difference.
Thank you for your attention to this issue and I look forward to seeing the ripple effect that your
leadership may generate across the globe.

years of my life on King Street and the remaining years until I was 19 and left Oahu with my husband,
in Ewa Beach on Pohakapuna Rd. Though I am no longer a resident, I visit when I can afford it and still
have many friends and lots of family there. My Hawaii is as important to me here on the Mainland as it
is for you there on the islands. I want my Hawai'i to always be healthy, beautiful and the floating garden
of Eden that it should be! Please, let's do this for the island and its animals ... those that cannot speak for
themselves. Let's get rid of plastic bags that are polluting our land and ocean and killing our animals!
