Aloha Council Member,
I am writing as a concerned citizen and parent to voice my support for the proposed ban
of plastic bags on the Big Island. I feel strongly enough about this issue to pay for
providing each of the County Council members with a copy of Bag It, a recent
documentary.
Bag It is about the use of plastic, and some of the unintended consequences of plastics
and their disposal. It is a well done movie - funny, interesting, inspirational, and
sobering all at the same time. It thoughtfully covers plastic bag bans and what towns
and consumers can do to reduce their plastic use on a daily basis.
This documentary is geared for the entire world, yet there are scenes in Bag It that hit
home, literally. It shows the global plastic waste that swirls in the Pacific Ocean, the
impact of plastic on ocean life, and tons of rubbish dumped at Kamilo Beach, South
Point.
While these anecdotes do not relate specifically to the ban of plastic bags, they are
about the aina and our responsibility to keep it clean and safe for animals and people. If
we do not take steps to protect our island environment, how can we expect others to do
so?
Many teachers have found this film useful in the classroom setting, and many of the
keiki have been inspired by it. I hope you will be too.
I encourage you to take a leadership role on the plastic issue. Banning plastic shopping
bags is a fantastic place to start!
