County Council I am a supporter for an updated adequate gym facility to reo_lace the Kawananakoa Hall in Reaukaha. The Kawananakoa Hall is not an adequate qym facility due to its antiquated, substandard size. The youth & public sector of several surrounding communities as well as the host community are being ill served, and neglected. These communities are Waiakea Houselots, Keaukaha, Leleiwi, and Panaewa. Other homeless native communities are Radio Bay, King's Landing, and Onekahakaha Heach. Historically, the County of Hawaii has benefitted directly since Statehood from Hawaiian Homes Lands use and cooperation in the South Hilo area (i.e. Keaukaha/Panaewa). Real property taxes (business & residential), real property easements for sewerline, sewer plants and water; these are all some direct benefits. Also indirectly, the disintegration of the original Keaukaha-Panaewa Subdivision into two distinct communities due to effected commercial business leases and the State Hilo Airport (including the now completed II phase Prince Kuhio Associates Development - WalMart, etc.) has also provided real benefits/dollars to our Hilo area, Hawaii Island, s County government. Has this been a equitable exchange for the children & members of these communities of generations past, present, & future? Our island population is quickly doubling. Recreational facilities are outdated and extremely overused. The number one (#1) used facility on the Island of Hawaii should be made new. Final passage of this bill would definitely give credence to our County leading the way towards this end. I hope your leadership in this matter will be positive. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact me at 808-961-8732 if you have any questions or need information on this matter.
