The Building Department is full of favoritism and if building codes become criminal then this department should be
investigated. Let me explain.
Example:
As an owner builder you can not pull your own plumbing permit it must be pulled by a Hawaii state licenced
plumbing contractor. It makes no difference that you have worked for a plumber for thirty years and know the
trade inside and out. The same goes for the electrical work no Hawaiian electrical contractor licence, no permit
will be drawn.
Now lets not forget that a set of building plans must have a architectural stamp on them. Even if you build HPM's
1056 that has been built hundreds upon hundreds of times here in Hawaii each and every one must have a new
architectural stamp to the tune of starting at $500.00 no stamp no permit.
The list goes on how about the perk test $250.00 and up in a neighborhood that already has hundreds of septic
systems in place.
So you want affordable housing, well you will not get it thru the Hawaii Building Department now the county
council is about to empower them making code violations criminal. Folks that's the real crime here.
