Subject: Reinstating the 2% Land Fund

The old saying can be true: "Give them a fish and they eat for a week; teach them to fish and they eat for a
lifetime."

The Land Fund may be like this. Hawaii County has to live within its means, the budget has to be balanced, we
have to maintain our good credit rating so borrowing funds won't require exorbitant costs. Every budget item has
its rightful claim.
Those requesting consideration for an item are obligated, I believe, to say specifically where funds should be cut
or reduced to pay for this item.
To me, the future has a greater claim than the present. I am 79 years old and value the County support for
seniors. However, let me urge you to cut funds for senior activities in order to pay for the 2% investment in the
land fund.
Seniors benefit from social opportunities, for some the events may even be a source of meals and health care.
Those making their livings as directors of senior - related activities and advocates will be eloquent about the need.
But in my view, by and large the community can step up to the plate, families can help, and we seniors can
entertain ourselves if needed.
Please restore the 2% Land Trust contribution. I am happy to go on record, as a senior, in saying if necessary-- -
take the funds allocated now in the budget for seniors and invest in the future.
The lands, once developed, can not be restored. We, who are old, can get along without line- dancing.
