HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0064.114 2010-2012To Hawaii County council. 7/13/11 We wish to let you know that we very much oppose Bill 17 from Kohala Councilman Pete Hoffman to ban retail stores from providing plastic bags to their customers at checkout. We oppose this council action for the following reasons: 1) We feel that that the handful of people at the county council should not be making decisions that affect everyones civil rights without taking a vote of all of the people on the island. 2 ) The plastic bags have been a valuable asset especially in the hard times recession that we have been experiencing. People re -use those bags and paper bags are not as useful for many purposes. 3) All studies that have been accomplished show that it is not logical to take the action that you plan to do. They found that the bags are not showing up in the water where you assume they are. Those studies were described by Walter Moe when he contacted you earlier. Either you people did not investigate the problem very well or think that you know better than the people that did the studies. 4) Paper bags will cost much more and will require wood products to produce and will require more storage and shipping. The extra costs will be passed on to all of us. Donald Tinker Tesse Tinker Comm. No. 6' // 51 Ref. To: Preseetiit CbI ,401. ' / Ref. Date JUL 1 n 7ntt
