Subject: Reinstate the 2% Land Fund
Aloha Council Members:
The 2% Land Fund must be reinstated. It is working well, just as it was intended.. .to save some very
precious "wahi pana" (special sites) that offers so much joy and inspiration to all of your constituents, to millions
of visitors. . .and if maintained, in perpetuity for future generations.
May I take this opportunity to respectfully remind Council members Blas, Hoffman, Smart, Ford and
Yagong that they signed a PLEDGE in Octobor, 2010 just before the election . . "to honor the voters of
Hawaii County who voted for the 2% Land Fund ordinance in 2006 to deposit 2% of our property taxes
in an open space fund...and that I will support resuming the deposits to the 2% Open Space Fund in
2011 and I will make sure that deposits are not suspended again." Many of your constituents rejoiced in
your commitment and in noting your pledge and that is why they voted for you. If you do not live up to
this pledge, the rejoicing among your constituents will certainly turn to regret and remembered for the next
election.
A pledge... is a pledge. ..is a pledge. If you turn your back on this pledge. ..it will speak loud and
clear about the flawed content of your character and personal integrity. If your pledge was nothing but empty
"words "...it will be extremely difficult for your constituents or anyone else to believe, trust and rely on any of
your future "words" as a member of our County Council. Please do not denigrate what many people believe to
be your outstanding commitment to honor and serve all publics of our wonderful island of Hawaii. That is why
they voted for you. Please do not turn your back to them. .
The visitor industry is the primary engine that drives our fragile island economy. And one of the main
reasons that this industry is surviving is because our visitors have a vast and wide variety of special places to
see and enjoy. The 2% Land Fund is a very effective fuel for our economic engine. The 2% Land Fund will
assure that these special places shall still be there in the future. Please do not act in a manner that will
threaten or greatly reduce the future economy of our island. ..and the State of Hawaii.
