I am writing to express my concern about development plans and rezoning of property identified as
TMK. 7- 5- 17 -43. I initially support the position of the Kona Orchard Homeowners' Association critical of
the proposed small size of the building lots. My objection to the development, however, is more to the
environmental pollution that will occur during lot preparation. The developers will bring in a rock crusher
and establish a quarrying operation(which in itself would seem to violate zoning) and produce Vermiculite
into the atmosphere. I have read where Vermiculite is characteristic of pulverized volcanic soils and has a
record of causing cancer in towns in Montana and Washington states.
The assault on the environment will go on daily as it did with the neighboring development, Pualani
Estates, for a long enough time to disrupt and damage the nearby organisms, namely human beings. The
development of Pualani was years of disruption(I lost track) by daily noise and dust. Everyday dust settled
in our house even though we had the windows and doors closed. I cannot settle for living in Hawaii with
the windows and doors closed.
In my attempt to understand the cause of my wife's death from lung cancer, my reading about mining
towns and cancer in Washington State and Montana led me to the correlation that those soils also are
volcanic soils. There is that correlation. I am not claiming cause and effect.
Councilwoman Ford, if my concerns are relative to your meeting with council Thursday, I would
appreciate your support for me.
