I don't think Mr. Hoffman, or any other council member, was elected by the public to stick pins in us
citizens, but that is what his proposed plastic bag ban does. Plastic grocery bags are a wonderful
convenience, and indispensable for some purposes. I would say that their usefulness outweighs the
supposed environmental harm they cause.
To replace them with paper is folly. The manufacture of paper is much more environmentally harmful,
in terms of clearcut forests, contaminated streams, release of CO2 and consumption of water in
manufacturing and fuel in shipping, since paper bags are larger in both volume and weight than plastic.
I have lived on the beach in Keaukaha for 21 years, and have yet to see a plastic bag in our pond.
Marine scientists say the "Garbage Patch" in the ocean contains NO plastic bags. Bio- degradable plastic
bags are available. So where's the problem Councilman Hoffman is trying to solve?
What this ordinance will do is, once again, deprive citizens of their freedom without their consent. It is
another annoying government intrusion into our daily lives. And it is not within the purview of the
council, in my opinion, to legislate on such a matter. At best, it strikes me as "feel good" legislation,
since we will still have the much larger and heavier plastic garbage and trash bags in our landfill.
Please, vote no and let me continue to gift my neighbors with produce from my garden, presented to
them with soil clinging to the roots and water dripping from the leaves, in plastic shopping bags.
