Subject: Plastic Bag Ban
Dear Council Members,
Please take my email comment as I may not be able to come to testify personally due to transportation
issues. First, thanks for continued efforts to get this issue before the people. I appreciate the effort here. I
do support the bag ban, though I understand that, at least at first, it may be something of an adjustment,
especially for merchants.
In many parts of the world people do not expect to get free bags when they shop. They bring their own
reusable bags. I have been doing this for over 30 years now, and really, it's not an inconvenience. To be
honest, the large canvas bags we bring with us are far stronger, last longer and hold much more than
these flimsy plastic bags.
Also, I think that people should be charged extra if they want paper bags as well. Paper bags are
certainly not without environmental drawbacks too. I don't honestly know which is better or worse for
the environment, paper or plastic, but we don't get either.
On the same issue as energy conservation, I think the County needs to replace their vehicle fleet with the
smallest and most fuel- efficient vehicles possible, when the time comes to replace vehicles. Large
hulking vehicles are really not what we need. I'd also like to see the county pass a resolution requesting
that rental car companies provide only fuel - efficient vehicles for renters (30 +mpg for small cars and
25 +mph for larger vehicles).
