Regarding your proposed plastic bag ban, which I heartily endorse, the absolute easiest step you can take is to
have the grocery stores stop providing the large paper and plastic bags that they use at the check out stations. It
is absolutely no trouble for a customer to bring in their own large fabric, reusable bags to pack up their purchases.
We live in Calif. part time and practically all the stores do that with no troubles. The only problem one might find is
to remember to bring the bags in with you from the car. But you will forget only once when there is no way to carry
out your purchases. If one can remember to bring in their wallet or purse , one can remember to bring in their
large bags.
I do think it may be wise to continue to provide the small plastic bags that one uses for fresh , wet vegetables.
The stores need to provide , high quality, reusable fabric bags for purchase. Trader Joes in California make the
best ones from our experience.
Costco has been doing a rather decent job with out using bags..The grocery stores can easily follow suit. The
stores give you five cents credit for each bag you bring in. They should also consider charging five cents for each
bag they have to provide! Hit the consumer in the pocketbook, that usually works. For this to work, ALL the
grocery stores need to participate. And do not put this ordinance off to some future distant date.
Also, regarding Robert Smith of Kona's comment in WHT " don't you have more important things to do" ? The
answer is , NO.! ... It is the Council's proper position to consider what you can do to reduce waste and to improve
packaging, educate the populace and make steps to reduce waste.
