Dear Councilman Onishi:
As president of KYD, INC, a Honolulu company producing packaging materials and
supplies statewide, I would like to express concern over the reported motion to dismiss
public hearings on Hawaii Council bill # 17, banning plastic bags on the island of
Hawaii.
As producers and distributors of both plastic and paper bags, we have taken a keen
interest in the ongoing controversy over the use of plastic. Based on our research, we feel
that banning of plastic is not the answer to the perceived problem created by its use for
bags. In many mainland cities where such a ban has been imposed, alternate forms of
packaging have proven to be more expensive both to producer and to consumer. At the
same time, the perceived problems of cluttering and harm to the environment have not
been diminished by the use of these alternative forms of packaging. The real answer to
these problems is a more educated and more efficient approach to recycling.
More important, we feel strongly that the people of the communities who will be affected
by such an important decision should be able to provide input to the discussion and be
allowed to express their opinion. To eliminate public hearings on the matter will take
away from your citizens this opportunity.
We urge you to oppose the motion to dismiss the public hearings on bill # 17!
