We oppose the nomination of Chris Manfredi to the planning board.

One person with the full breadth of time and resources at their disposal should not be able to usurp the will of the
people.
This is the foundation of a democratic society. We rely upon our elected government to be aware of and stop a
single individual from filling the vacuum of leadership that imperils our organizations and groups.
In the most difficult of economic times, working citizens are forced to turn their full attention to staying afloat,
limiting their ability to directly participate. At these times, our government officials must be vigilant in protecting our
citizens from those that would seek to influence our democratic process disproportionately.
That influence, which came in the form of financial political contributions, compelled the county planning director
to approve Mr. Manfredi's plan for an unimproved subdivision, with little or no infrastructure, for million dollar
homes in the heart of one of Hawaii's prime agricultural zones. These entitlements can and should be challenged
in court, but the county and the mayor have placed that burden on our citizens.
To suggest that this is the end of Mr. Manfredi's conflict of interest is foolhardy. If anything, it is the mayor's way
around our elected county counsel.
