Aloha,
Here we go again. Last year the same campaign to ban fish collecting failed, and
now, Snorkel Bob and Rene Umberger are again trying to stop an industry that brings
Millions of Dollars annually into the Kona Economy.
It is bad enough that the Economy in general is depressed.
Here in Kona we have had more and more bad times. For example, the tourists that
used to come on the Cruise Ships, and would spend money to bolster our Economy are
basically no more. We get one Cruise Ship a week. Due to the Volcano, they have
stopped coming to Kona. We used to have one Ship a day and on some days two.
The VOG has had deleterious effects on our agriculture industry. It's unhealthful
vapors have driven away more tourists.
The last thing we need now is for a thriving industry like aquarium fish collecting to
be stopped.
There are already in force scads of rules and regulations to protect the fish. Over
half the Kona Coast is in a Fish Replenishment Zone, where no collecting is allowed.
I fear that there will be annual attempts by the above individuals to bring the matter
up again and again. It is a waste of everyone's time and money.
The Humane Society should be spending its funds and energy in keeping their Dogs
and Cats Healthy, and finding Homes for them. They have killed thousands of
animals. Just recently we got a Dog from them. It was sick, full of worms, and
exposed to Distemper.
I urge you to put this matter to rest, and stop another attempt to kill a needed
industry here in Kona that helps support our Economy.
I snorkel and have lived here for over 25 years. I have not seen any less fish in the
Ocean.
