Aloha Council,
I strongly support
Resolution 130 -11 and 140 -11. Banning aquarium fish collecting should have been done
years ago, and here we are with NO regulations, whatsoever, in the state of Hawaii
regulating aquarium fish collecting. Unlimited number of permits are being sold, there are
NO limits of catch, and there are NO protection for endemic or endangered species in
place. Several years ago, the Senate was unanimously in favor of banning AQ collecting,
and was stopped by one person in the House. I've attended several meetings to stop AQ
collecting. There were over 100 people there asking DLNR to ban it and two AQ collectors.
That should indicate the majority wants to see it stopped now. I am in the water all the
time here on Maui and it is rare to see a yellow tang or butterfly fish anywhere except in
the only marine protected area on Maui (Ahihi - Kinau). I have seen reports from DLNR/ DAR
on fish counts in FRA areas. Some species have remained sustainable and other species are
now non - existent, but is anything being done about it ?! Not yet, but this is the perfect
opportunity to get things rolling. Healthy reefs need clean water and reef fish. Reef fish
have a purpose on the reef and removal upsets the balance.
Tourists and locals want to see fish. As long as there are no limits for AQ collectors, it
is just a matter of time before they become unsustainable. What about future generations?
Is it really more important to send our fish to a death in aquarium, or let them live
where they belong. Please pass this resolution.

Dear Committee Chair Pilago : I strongly support banning aquarium collecting. It should
have been stopped years ago. There are no regulations on how many permits are sold, how
many fish can be taken or what fish can be taken, including endemic and endangered.
