We wish to register our strong opposition to the proposed development on Hualalai Road. Our
opposition is based on a variety of factors, some of which are listed below.
Flood issues will be worsened due to the mass grading of the natural, hilly topography.
Current manmade and natural flood control features have not been able to handle the massive
volume of rain water that is often generated from up above on Mt. Hualalai. The area in
question has become a "lake" on many occasions.
Hualalai Road is in a serious state of disrepair. The road and its crumbling retaining walls
have ongoing and overall upkeep /safety issues. It poses a serious vehicular and pedestrian
danger as visibility is severely limited and cars travel over the posted speed limit. Allowing
entry and exit roads on to Hualalai Road will add to the danger of this already treacherous
county road.
The proposed overall density is not in keeping with the neighborhood's rural flavor and is
highly objectionable. Lot size should be set at a minimum of one acre. In addition to lot size, a
green buffer zone between Hualalai Road and any development should strive to create a park
like appearance.
As the gateway to historic Holualoa Village, Hualalai Road should feel inviting to residents and
visitors. Many small businesses in Holualoa Village and the surrounding area depend on the
revenue of people enticed to come up and experience the coffee belt and its unique history.
Driving through an overdeveloped, mainland style suburbia is anything but inviting.
The covert tactic of breaking up vast tracts of land into 15 acre parcels by mainland developers
in order to avoid specific planning regulations is highly offensive! In recent years community
members and planning groups have, thankfully, become more vigilant in regards to this greed
driven developer ploy.

points into consideration as you think about the Kona we all want and need in the future.
