Dear Ladies, dear Sirs,
with great interest we've learned that tomorrow the Hawaii county council will be
considering a resolution relating to restrictions for aquarium trade.
Pro Wildlife is a charity, based in Germany and dedicated to the conservation of wildlife
worldwide, especially those sepcies that are threatened by international trade. We are
very much concerned about the plundering of coral reefs for the international aquarium
trade and the related serious conservation and animal welfare implications.
Hawaii is home to a unique and precious, but highly sensitive underwater world: A
significant portion of the ornamental fish collected off Hawaii is endemic and populations
have suffered severe declines due to over - collection.
We therefore welcome Hawai's initiative and urge the county council to ban the collection
of all coral reef wildlife for the international aquarium trade.
