Dear Councilmembers,
During the worst economic times since the Great Depression it is both cruel
and inhumane to crack down on building codes as with the proposed Bill 270. I vehemently
oppose this bill.
I am a long -time member of the Board of the Hawaiian Acres Community Association and in our
rain - forest sub - division there are many single- occupant and family homes that the County would
consider sub - standard according to current and proposed building codes.
But in the last 20 years I have never heard of an injury caused by "sub- standard" buildings.
People build what they can afford, and many slowly achieve the American dream of home-
ownership by starting from scratch. They purchase land and live on it while slowly building a
standard home. This is creating wealth and should be encouraged, not discouraged.
It is a practice that enables people like myself to rise from poverty and join the middle class. It
does not hurt anyone.
To criminalize living in a structure that does not conform to official building codes is a moral
injustice.
And in these terrible economic times the idea that you are even discussing such an issue is
outrageous.
Please defeat Bill 270 in the name of justice, fairness and humanity towards all.
Sincerely, Mark Van Doren
