It is already difficult for us as we try to comply with existing County, State and Federal
regulations regarding building and zoning.
A small ecotourist farm like ours in Puna would never survive under those regulations.
Right now we are still able to be a tax paying farm. We receive no government funding despite
our environmental work restoring a natural Hawaiian scenic landmark, a volcanic puka (crater)
that is located on our property which was formerly used as a junkyard.
However, the continual pressure of complying with ever more complicated government
building regulations now and in the future if Bill 270 passes would force us to close thus
reducing the tax base and adding to the unemployment in Puna, which already has one of the
highest rates on unemployment in the state of Hawaii.
Criminal penalties should not be in place for violation of building codes.
We need to adopt more ecofriendly building codes that protects the Hawaiian environment by
using locally sourced, renewable and recyclable building materials.
We do not need more regulations that would force us to import even more building materials
than we currently do putting even more pressure on local landfills.
