I am writing to you in strong opposition to Bill 270. As a 20 plus year resident of Hawaiian Acres, I
believe that this bill is both unnecessary and unjust. It will disproportionately target our already most
vulnerable citizens —the elderly, poor, disabled, and unemployed. I have already heard anecdotal
stories of residents in a state of panic at the idea of possibly losing their homes. The timing of this
particular bill could not be worse — the economic landscape is difficult for many of us and there doesn't
seem to be much light at the end of the tunnel. In fact, many economists now predict a "double dip"
recession.
Additionally, we have a long history of building unique, distinctive, and quite beautiful homes in the
island tradition. Do we really want to open the door to the development of the beige, cookie - cutter
subdivisions so prevalent on the mainland? Pricing folks out of their homes is just wrong and will be
the last straw for many struggling island households. By the way, these folks are also taxpayers and
involved in many community projects as unpaid volunteers.
I would ask you to please reconsider the passage of this bill and any other that creates such hardship
on those who can least afford it. This letter represents the views of VOTERS in my household and we
will be looking closely at the actions of the Council. You represent us — please look into your hearts and
minds and do not allow the passage of Bill 270.
