Subject: Hawai'i County Testimony for 6/30/11
Aloha mai kakou,
My apologies that I cannot be there tomorrow to testify to you in person. Unfortunately, there is an
Hawai'i Ecosystems conference happening at the same time at UH Hilo that conflicts with your meeting
about Bill 29.
At any rate, I am writing to you all today to express my full SUPPORT of the 2% Land Fund and
saving Hawai'i Island's great places. I understand that we are in a time of economic duress, where funds
need to be pinched and squeezed from wherever possible. However, I beg you, the 'aim is NOT where
we should cut funds. Prices of land are at record lows, and now if ever, is the time to be making steps
towards purchasing and preserving these last precious spots for our future generations. While you
cannot put a price tag on a healthy ecosystem (coral reefs, coastal strands, surf breaks, ala kahakai trails,
etc.), in the long run, preserving these natural places NOW will bring more money into our County in
the end.
So, I am humbly asking for your continued support of the the 2% land fund ordinance (what the majority
of Hawai'i Island voters already endorsed in 2006; and our Councilmembers Smart, Blas, Ford, Pilago,
and Hoffman committed to support again 2010):
Please vote NO on Bill 29, Draft 3 decreasing value /effectiveness of our land fund.
