Sako Deputy Director The State of Hawaii Department of Health, Maternal & Child Health Branch is providing federally derived funds of $4,995 for the purpose of supporting the Office of the Mayor /Immigration Information Office's Community Based Child Abuse Prevention program. Enclosed is a resolution to authorize the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the State of Hawaii Department of Health for this grant. Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating this $4,995 Community Based Child Abuse Prevention Grant. REQUEST: A resolution authorizing the Mayor to accept a grant from the Hawaii State Department of Health, Maternal & Child Health Branch, Community Based Child Abuse Prevention Program, to provide funding for "Ating Bahay", a community based response committee, to a organze a strategic planning conference and other related activites to adress domestic violence specificaly for immigrant women, men, and children. To amend the FY11 -12 Operating Budget, Ordinance No 11 -59 to appropriate $4,995 for the Community Based Child Abuse Prevention Grant. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): Ating Bahay is a grassroots committee -based organization that was created to address domestic violence in the immigrant communities. It is planning a conference and several strategic planning sessions to create awareness and develop domestic violence prevention strategies within the immigrant communities. In recent years, the number of domestic violence deaths has increased amongst immigrant women, sparking a community outcry to respond.
