The Big Island should promote a diversified economy and not rely 100% on tourism. A diversified
economy whether it be agricultural fruits, flowers for export, coffee, fishing, or aquarium fishing all
contribute to a stable economy. Providing that activity is properly managed it should be encouraged.
The Department of Aquatic Resources has spent many years developing not only management of the
aquarium fishery but also managing the fishery to reduce conflicts that might occur. This has resulted
in a managed fisheries that allows both tourism and the aquarium fishery to contribute to the jobs and
economy of the Big Island.
Please before taking my livelihood of the last 16 years away speak to those that have not only the
credentials but have the facts from their research of this fishery. For example speaking with Dr. Walsh
is convenient as he is located on the Big Island at the Kona DAR office and manages the aquarium
fisheries here. Yet here are disturbing quotes below from Dr. Walsh that provide concern as to how
well resolution 140 -11 was vetted before introduction.
Dr. Walsh was quoted in the February 2, 2011 edition of Coral Magazine. "We have the data," says
Walsh, "but none of the legislators have even bothered to ask for it." He went on to say that
"Fundamentally [these bills] are defeatist and potentially destructive," (later in the
paragraph) "They're essentially institutionalizing the idea that fisheries here in Hawaii cannot be
sustainably managed."
