From: Grant Heidrich [Grant @gheidrich.com] Sent: Friday, September 16, 2011 5:07 AM To: counciltestimony @co.hawaii.hi.us Subject: Resolution to Ban Collection of Ornamental Fish for Commercial Resale I fully endorse efforts to pass a legislative ban on the collection of ornamental fish for commercial resale. I am a significant ocean front property owner and tax payer and loathe the ongoing and virtually unregulated collection of one of the state's most precious resources, our oceans and its habitat. After all, the lions share of our revenue in the state is derived from tourism which is heavily stimulated by the quality of our ocean environment. Whatever paltry economic benefit is derived from the collection and sale of our fish, many of which are endemic, is dwarfed by the revenue generated by the trade outside our state. Hawaiians of course get no benefit from that; our benefit is the destruction of our precious native resource. We are depleting our resource! It is the fiduciary duty of our elected officials to safeguard, protect, and nurture our precious resources for the benefit of our children and future generations. Each of you has a moral obligation to end the collection of these fish. This is a marvelous opportunity to take a leadership role in our "green" state, and support this bill, ending these ill conceived practices that in the end will undermine our socials and economic viability.
