Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740 DATE: November 14, 2011 2:/crivi 4 Zan-- TO: Dominic Yagong, Chairperson, __ anti a+clN and Members of the Hawai`i County Council FROM: /''"Brenda J. Ford, Council Member SUBJECT:::/ Unclaimed Property at the State of Hawai`i The State of Hawai`i maintains a website (ehawaii.gov/lilo/app) containing a list of persons and businesses that are owed money. This money may be refunds from insurance companies, banks, title companies, etc. where the person or business owed money cannot be located. The money is turned over to the State and held until claimed. Zero balances indicate something other than cash (e.g. safety deposit boxes, stock, etc.). Each person needs to check the website for their name using last name, first name, and first and possibly middle initial, and include misspellings of their name in the searches. Also, check for abbreviations of personal names. Businesses should search for every conceivable spelling and abbreviation of their name including titles of departments. For those people who do not have access to a computer or the internet, the county council offices in Hilo and Kona will maintain a partial list of these records. The website has claim forms to complete and return to the State of Hawaii for living and deceased individuals as well as businesses. I will have a guest speaker who has worked on this matter for two years who will make a short presentation of less than 10 minutes. I request that this matter be placed on the agenda in the Finance Committee on December 6, 2011 for a discussion. I estimate 30 minutes will be needed. BJF/dkr Comm. No. Ref. To: FC,_ Ref.
