Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Resolution No.
186-11, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 186-11, from Public Works Director Warren W. H. Lee, transmitted via Communication
No. 448, dated October 25, 2011, granting a variance from Chapter 3, Section 3-58 (a)(5)(B), 3-58 (c)
and 3-59 (a)(5) of the Hawai`i County Code (1983) 2005 Edition.
The applicant is requesting a sign variance for two (2) wall signs. The proposed signs are 147.78 square
feet in area with a 66-inch symbol. The maximum allowable letter and/or symbol is nine inches per
Section 3-58 (c), Chapter 3, Hawai`i County Code. The business is located in CG-20 zone which limits
the wall sign to nine feet in height per Section 3-59(a)(4), Chapter 3, Hawai`i County Code.
The applicant was represented by Mr. John Yates, Manager of the Kona Wal-Mart. Mr. Yates informed
Committee Members that the new sign would actually be smaller than the existing sign and he also
explained that the new method of lighting (back lighting) would lessen the sign's illumination as well.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution 186-11, and recommends its adoption.
