Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 59-99, transmitted by
Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro per Communication No. 188, dated February 17, 1999, regarding
the naming of a street in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 59-99 authorizes the renaming ofKokoiki-Mahukona-Kawaihae Highway to
"Akoni Pule Highway", which is located on Highway No. 270, from its intersection with
Kawaihae Road to its terminus at the Pololu Valley Lookout in North and South Kohala.
The State House of Representatives adopted House Resolution No. 353 (1973) honoring the
former State Representative from Kohala, Akoni Pule, by renaming the Kawaihae-Mahukona
Highway to Akoni Pule Highway. The County Council adopted Resolution No. 88 in 1973
which requested the Advisory Committee on Geographic Names to re-name the
Kokoiki-Mahukona-Kawaihae Highway on the Island of Hawaii as the "Akoni Pule Highway".
On May 16, 1983, the Director of the State Department of Transportation granted permission to
the Planning Director to name roads under State jurisdiction.
The Planning Commission at its February 5, 1999 meeting voted to recommend the name
change.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution No. 59-99, and
recommends its adoption.
