Re: A Request for a Presentation from the Department of Environmental Management and
the Department of Civil Defense regarding Marine Debris from the March 11, 2011
Japanese Tsunami.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimated that roughly 25
million tons of marine debris was generated by the Japanese Tsunami of March 11, 2011. Some
of this debris is estimated to hit the Hawaiian Islands as early as the beginning of this year.
I would like to request time during the January 31, 2012, meeting of the Environmental
Management Committee for a joint presentation from the Department of Environmental
Management and the Department of Civil Defense to provide the Council and the public an
update on what these departments are doing to monitor and track the debris. The Council would
also like to know if the departments have devised a plan to deal with the debris once it hits the
shoreline.
I estimate that 30 minutes will be sufficient for this presentation, which will include time for
questions from the Council Members.
