I wish I could be present for this meeting, but at this time I have just arrived at my
college for my Freshman Orientation. Although I cannot by physically present, I do feel
that speaking against the proposed development is my duty as a seven -year resident of
Kona Orchards. This proposed development does not consider the social and ecological
life of the area in question. Such a dense and vast uniformly developed residential area
would devastate the local landscape. This would be the second large development, after
Pualani Estates, which left little to no natural space. The established flora can preserve a
cool microclimate and act as the lungs of this area. If the same clear- cutting will be
imposed on the land for this development, these lungs would be further damaged, and the
ecological and social service of cleaning the vog- ridden air would be compromised. As a
person with allergies to vog, this is an important factor to consider.
With little time and money, a study to understand the nature, natural streams, and
significance of the topography, would allow the developers to find the optimal spaces for
development (likely close to 10% of the land.) With this understanding and thoroughness
of process, the quality of life for the future residents will improve, and the quality of life
for residents in surrounding areas will be preserved. Also, developments should always
reserve land for future generations. Short- sightedness is an unwise approach when
dealing with land use. In enlarging our view of the history of development below
Hualalai Road, we see that south of the proposed area care for the established land was
disregarded. Let us be bold in introducing a thoughtful and creative approach to using
this land.
It would break my heart to find the Hawaii that I love has become lost space
without opportunity for social and natural relationship- building. I do not want to come
back to an island cut and pasted from urban sprawl that I see so much of on the Mainland.
With a mainly tourist economy that depends on preserving this diverse landscape, we
cannot afford to so carelessly dispose of this key parcel.
