STOP THE SILENT INVASION
COORDINATING GROUP ON
ALIEN PEST SPECIES
October 3, 2011
Hawai ❑ i County Council
Environmental Management Committee
Aloha Chair Smart and Committee Members,
The statewide Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS) is a voluntary public - private
partnership formed in 1994 to protect Hawai`i from invasive species. While the axis deer is
valued for its meat and as a game species, the presence of axis deer costs millions of dollars per
year in impacts to agriculture, public health and safety, and natural resources, resulting in higher
costs to society. Although not mentioned in the bill language, collisions between vehicles and
deer in Maui County are on the rise, along with the increase in deer population on Maui alone.
Vehicle damage, health and human safety, car insurance premiums, and the cost of deer
deterrents and signage along roadsides should also be considered as costs to society,
CGAPS is grateful for the leadership that Hawai ❑ i County Council is showing on this issue by
helping to address the movement of axis deer. CGAPS supports Bill 112, and respectfully
requests that you pass it. Mahalo for your time and consideration.
Aloha,
Christy Martin, Public Information Officer
Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species
