Re: Bill 112 on restricting Axis deer from the Big Island of Hawaii. Such a broad brush restriction of Axis deer or
any game animal is short sighted and an immature management strategy of what should actually be a more
studied approach to encouraging commerce on the Big Island. This clearly hysterical response to rumor, only
points out that many of us here on the Big Island are not adequately questioning the purported impact of
imported animals to Hawaii and the potential return possible with proper management of resources.
The answer to any threat is to measure the threat in the first place. This is lacking from the current approach to
resource management here in Hawaii. The idea that one can state a threat without question presumes it to be
true is not only faulty science, the economic result and wasted expense on fences, eradications, an millions of
dollars wasted with no economic return to the Big Island and indeed the State of Hawaii incurred due to
paradigm rather than adequate public review and input, only points out the reality that decisions are made by
fiat and networking rather than a serious approach to solving problems, which, in the free world, require a
shared stake in the solution, in this case the recreational user, the land steward (also the recreational user), and
the scientific community equally.
