Relating to restricting the transportation of Axis deer into the County of Hawaii.
Chair Dominic Yagong and Members of the Committee:
My name is Keoki Wood and I am the Livestock Operations Manager for Parker Ranch Inc. Parker Ranch
operates on 130,000 acres of which almost all of it used for beef cattle production.
Parker Ranch Inc. strongly supports Bill 112 and suggest that it should not only be illegal to transport
Axis Deer to but within the County of Hawaii
If Axis deer are established on the Big Island they will create significant damage to pastures and other
watershed and conservation areas through unmanageable grazing. In addition they will create
significant traffic hazards to all Big Island motorists as deer are nocturnal animals that will end up
crossing the highways at night. Currently Parker Ranch is cooperating with the Big Island Invasive
Species Committee to set up surveillance sites and monitor deer populations. With a concerted effort,
the Deer can be eradicated before they become a nuisance, unless people intentionally import and
transport them to new locations.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to testify in favor of this very important issue.
