Yamashiro per Communication No. 193, dated March 2, 1999, regarding the naming of streets in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows: Resolution No. 62-99 authorizes the naming of streets within the Naniakea Subdivision, Waakea, South Hilo, Hawaii, Tax Map Key 2-4-14:214. Pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22, Hawaii County Code, the Council is authorized to adopt street names for Hawaii County's unnamed roadways. The Planning Commission at its February 19, 1999 meeting, voted to recommend the adoption of the street names as follows: Road A "Naniakea Street" extension of existing street Road B "Nikolao Place" Hawaiian word for Nicholas Road C "Mika`ele Place" Hawaiian word for Michael Road D "Kia`i Place" meaning guard, watchman Road E "Ho`omakoa Place" meaning to act bravely Road F "Kelika Place" Hawaiian word for Derick Resolution No. 62-99 and Communication No. 193 were first placed on the April 20, 1999 agenda, but deferred until today. Because Your Committee awaited the response from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to the recommendations of the University of Hawaii at Hilo regarding Resolution No. 60-99, both resolutions were deferred until today. Your Committee sought recommendations from the University of Hawaii at Hilo regarding the correct spelling of the above-mentioned names with diacritical marks, and received a modified list. Some members of Your Committee firmly believe that the diacritical marks should be used, however, due to the length of the discussion regarding the previous Resolution No. 60-99, Your Committee did not offer any discussion on Resolution No. 62-99.
