I wholeheartedly support Bill 112 to halt the transportation of Axis Deer to Hawai`i Island. As a Youth
Conservation Corps Team Leader this past summer, I worked in conservation areas where the four to
five foot fences could not keep Axis Deer out. In my current job as an Outplanting Technician at
Pohakuloa Training Area, I have seen firsthand that four foot high fences cannot even prevent wild
Mouflon sheep from infiltrating enclosures. If Axis Deer roamed through Pohakuloa Training Area,
decades of hard work to protect and restore endangered Hawaiian plants would be lost in a span of
months.
To further protect Hawai`i's conservation and agricultural lands, please prohibit the on- island harboring
and transport of the deer. Expanding the list of prohibited species to include mule deer and other
damaging ungulates would also improve the bill. Thank you for all that you do to ensure a healthy and
beautiful Hawai`i.
Sincerely,
Malie Larish
