Subject: Res 117 -11 Support
Dear Councilmember Hoffman:
COUNTY CLERK *MA=
COUNTY Or HAWAII
2011 OCT —1.1 PM 3: 18_
I urge you to support Resolution 117 -11 in support of a Hawaii County Complete Streets Policy. This Resolution is
an important step towards strengthening our Big Island communities.
In addition, by designing and developing a better and more efficient transportation system, one designed around
multi -modal transportation options rather than just the automobile, you will be reducing the cost of transportation
for both individuals and tax payers. Providing alternative modes of transportation to the automobile enables
households to reduce the number of cars they must support to ensure mobility for all household members.
Because every car represents a tax payer burden of nearly $5,000 per year, and at least $50,000 worth of house
to the individual per automobile owned in 1990 dollars and interest rates, designing for more efficient
transportation alternatives frees income for other uses.
Places with well- designed multi -modal transportation systems, systems that enable individuals to walk, ride a
bike, take the bus, and /or take rail, become highly desirable destinations for residents, businesses and tourists
alike. Good multi -modal transportation systems not only give residents choices in terms of how to spend their
income and how to move around, but they strengthen local economies as well.
I stronly urge you to vote in support of Resolution 117 -11.
Mahalo,
Tania Howard
