On September 22, 2009 I was hit by a car (at no fault of mine) while riding my bike. Luckily I did not break any bones and was able to fully recover in 3 weeks to represent Hilo at the Ironman in Kona 3 weeks later. The conditions of Hawaii's roads are the worst I have ever seen in the entire country. They are not bicycle or pedestrian friendly which contradicts the idea of Hawaii having a sustainable future. How can we be sustainable if our roads are only meant to be driven on by cars that burn oil from other countries? I urge you to support Resolution 171 -11 in support of a Hawaii County Complete Streets Policy. This Resolution is an important step towards strengthening our Big Island communities. Complete Streets help to make it safer for everyone to get to where they need to go, whether they are walking, riding a bike, driving a car or riding the bus. In addition, complete streets help to provide access to physical activity and will help to provide greater mobility choices for our keiki and kupuna. I strongly urge you to vote in support of Resolution 171 -11. Mahalo, Brian Yannutz 438 Kaumana Dr. Hilo, HI 96720 Please consider the environment before printing this email. 10/4/2011 Comm.
