This Resolution is an important step towards strengthening our Big Island communities. Complete Streets help to make it safer for everyone to get to where they need to go, whether they are walking, riding a bike, driving a car or riding the bus. In addition, complete streets help to provide access to physical activity and will help to provide greater mobility choices for our keiki and kupuna. I am a bicycle commuter. Most of my friends and co- workers think I am nuts. The streets within Hilo and elsewhere in East Hawaii are simply not conducive to safe bicycle travel or walking. There are roadways such as Kilauea Avenue in Hilo where I literally have to be bicycling within a travel lane, or riding on the sidewalk, which endangers pedestrians and which is illegal. I have hit the raised "pedestrian dividers" on roadways such as Puainako Street and almost fell into traffic- they are a liability waiting to happen. Roadways in Hawaii County need to accommodate all users safely and equitably. I strongly urge you to vote in support of Resolution 117 -11. Mahalo, Douglas K.
