Dear Chair Yagong and Council Members,
Other pacific islands have recognized that reef wildlife is far more valuable when left on
their reefs and not shipped off for a short term hobby. The Commonwealth of the Northern
Mariana Islands prohibits commercial aquarium collecting (see below).
Scientists around the world agree that unless we act immediately, coral reefs will be gone
within 50 years. There's simply no reason to allow essential reef animals to be taken at
the expense of reef resilience.
Hawaii lead the world last year by protecting sharks from destructive finning and now
pacific island nations are following suit. Please support this resolution for the Big
Island, for the State of Hawaii, and,
ultimately, for all Indo - pacific coral reefs.

SECTION 80. AQUARIUM FISH PROHIBITIONS
80.1 The sale or export of marine aquarium fish is prohibited.
80.2 An aquarium fish license is required by any person who
captures aquarium fish for personal use or
enjoyment.
80.3 No poisons may be used to collect aquarium fish, except
for purposes of scientific research
when a scientific research permit expressly allows for such use.

a. Certain hand nets not previously registered by Conservation
b. Small surround nets (less than 8 meters in length);
c. Barbless hook and line; and
d. Other collection methods specifically allowed in a written
condition to a permit.
