Dear Committee Chair Pilago : I am writing to request that you immediately impose a ban on
the collection of tropical fish for purposes of commercial sale.
I know that you have a strong environmental record. You now have a unique opportunity to
take a global leadership role on this issue, and leave a legacy for current and future
generations. As Governmental Relations Committee Chair, you have the authority to do this
and to confirm your status as a leader who is committed to the protection of our ocean and
reefs.
Our beautiful tropical fish are an irreplaceable resource, and they are central to
Hawaiian heritage and culture. Yet, there is no protection for them in the face of
aggressive harvesting and shipment out of the state.
Please act now by executive order and implement a ban of the collection of reef fish for
commercial sale, and preserve native Hawaii.
