Dear Chair Yagong,
Please allow my colleague, Inga Gibson, Hawaii Director for The Humane Society of the United States
(HSUS), to present the attached statement on my behalf, pertaining to Resolution 130 -11: To Prohibit
the Sale of Aquatic Life for Aquarium Purposes.
I am a professional zoologist employed by Humane Society International, the international arm of
HSUS, in the position as Director of the Wildlife Department. I obtained my Ph.D. in zoology from the
University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1989 and have worked for HSI since 1990. My area of expertise is the
conservation and welfare impacts of international trade in wild- caught animals.
In preparing this statement in support of Resolution 130 -11, I have reviewed the most recent scientific
and management information that pertains to the West Hawaii Regional Fisheries Management Area
aquarium fishery. It is a timely and necessary recommendation given the documented threats to fish
populations in West Hawaii caused by the completely unregulated and demonstrably unsustainable
collection of aquatic life for aquarium purposes.
