Yesterday I went collecting to the north of Kawaiihae. I was pleased to see how little the coastline had changed since 1980. I was also pleased to find that underwater the fish collecting was the same as 31 years ago when I almost exclusively fished in that area. In fact I compared my catch yesterday to a day that I submitted in my DLNR catch report in 1980 and it was almost the same. Actually yesterday was a little better despite my being 31 years older and slower. This is a sustainable fishery. I think you should consider my comments above but they should not be given a huge "weighting" in your decision. This being as it is not scientific and it could be biased. The State has employed a scientist, Dr. Walsh who is working full time on the management and monitoring of the aquarium fishery and he can provide the facts. In situations where there is a lot of emotion along with claims and counter claims that are 180 degree opposite, getting the facts becomes even more critical. I leave next month for an Aquarium Management Conference in New Caledonia sponsored by the South Pacific Commission. My role is to provide a fishermen's perspective of the West Hawaii Regional Fisheries Management Area. Interestingly the County Council is considering the closure of aquarium collection in the WHRFMA which is famous around the world for being an enlightened approach to coastal management and aquarium collection. One of the representatives from the South Pacific Commission was at a conference in Hawaii when this resolution received a majority vote two weeks ago. I now need to explain in my presentation why that occurred but quite frankly I am at a loss to explain why the County Council section of the government wants to close the State governments success story. Sincerely, Anthony Nahacky ( Aquarium License 3210) Comm. NcL_333 /3 Ref. To: Ref. Dote CT 5 10/4/2011
