Dear Dominic Yagong, Chairperson and Members of the Hawai'i County Council,
I am a concerned citizen and resident of the State of Hawaii. I am hopeful that Hawaii County
will BAN PLASTIC BAGS and set a standard that Oahu can follow.
I urge you to pass this bill.
Why we should BAN plastic bags:
Plastic bags for use by consumers in supermarkets and other stores should be made illegal.
Billions of plastic bags are handed to consumers each year, representing a substantial
proportion of all floating marine litter. More than this, plastic bags are responsible for the
deaths of huge numbers of marine species, who mistake the bags for food. Consumers must
accept that it is hugely wasteful, massively unethical, and potentially deadly to continue using
plastic bags.
BAN plastic bags, AND implement a fee on PAPER single use bags:
In order to avoid having consumers simply switch from plastic to paper bags, implement a fee
on PAPER bags (along with a plastic ban). This way we reduce our waste AND bring
revenue to the County.
Mahalo Nui Loa for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Leslie Uptain
