Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 136-99, transmitted by
Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro per Communication No. 423, dated August 17, 1999, regarding
the naming of a street in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 136-99 authorizes the approval of a street name for a roadway within the `Alohi
Kai Subdivision, Kaumalumalu, North Kona, Hawaii.
The Planning Commission at its August 6, 1999, meeting approved the name for the roadway as
follows:
"Ke `Alohi Kai Place"
Committee Member Leningrad Elarionoff raised athought-provoking question as to why street
names are a combination of Hawaiian names and English terms, as in this case. Your Chair
responded that it is probably done because it would be difficult for people, especially the
non-residents, to locate a place if they don't understand that that is the name of the road. Also if
the terms "road", "drive", or "highway" were in Hawaiian, for which there are equivalent terms,
"it would be changing the way we classify roads all over the island." Your Chair also stated that
this issue has never been addressed.
Committee Member Elarionoff then stated that he raised this concern because "when you put it
all in English, it doesn't sound like proper terminology or proper vocabulary use." Committee
Member Curtis Tyler agreed, and offered to work with Mr. Elarionoff to see what can be done
about it.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution No. 136-99, and
recommends its adoption.
