HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PC 061 10/26/1999 1998-2000 REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON PLANNING DATE: October 26, 1999 Re: C-488 PLACE: Councilroom TIME: 2:00 p.m. Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 488 transmitted by Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro dated October 13, 1999, reports as follows: Communication No. 488 recommends the appointment of the following individual to the Hawaii County Water Commission to serve a term ending December 31, 2004: Mr. F.arl T. Nakashima, of no political affiliation, will replace John R. Souza of Hamakua, whose term will expire on December 31, 1999. Mr. Nakashima, a 56-year resident of Hawaii, has been aself-employed nursery operator since 1980. He is a member of the Honokaa Business Association, the Hamakua Lions, the Encogen Foundation and the Kaapahu Community Association. Pursuant to Section 8-2 of the Hawaii County Charter, the mayor shall appoint members to the Water Commission to be confirmed by the Council, as prescribed in Section 13-4 of the Hawaii County Charter. Committee Member Dominic Yagong stated that Mr. Nakashima recently served on the Liquor Commission, and has extensive business expertise which he brings to this Commission. He also stated that Mr. Nakashima's experience in agriculture and the forestry industry will be his "greatest gift" to this appointment. Committee Member Curtis Tyler stated that Mr. Nakashima's nomination is an appropriate one because he is filling the vacant seat from the Hamakua district. Your Committee on Planning recommends [he approval of the appointment of Mr. Earl T. Nakashima to the Hawaii County Water Commission.
