Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred
Resolution No. 250-12, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 250-12, transmitted by Council Member Brittany Smart, via Communication No. 697,
dated April 20, 2012, urges the State of Hawai`i Department of Transportation to construct a designated
pedestrian crossing area for the Volcano Village Community across Mamalahoa Highway, commonly
known as Highway 11 or the Hawai`i Belt Road.
The State and County have a strong interest in promoting more healthy and economical transportation
options for Hawai`i Island residents, such as walking and public transportation and, therefore, should
encourage and provide the necessary infrastructure to support these goals.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No. 250-12, and recommends its adoption.
