SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CODE AMENDMENT:
SECTION 24-281 - PARKING PROHIBITED DURING CERTAIN HOURS
ON CERTAIN STREETS — MOHOULI STREET
We request the Hawai'i County Code, Chapter 24, Article 10 (Schedules), Division 5
(Parking), Section 24-281, Schedule 29 (Parking prohibited during certain hours on
certain streets; tow-away zone), subsection (c) (South Hilo) be amended by deleting
item 18:
(18) Mohouli Street, on the Puna side, those three metered stalls mauka of Kilau a
This amendment was generated by a request to improve the flow of traffic through the
Mohouli Street/Kilauea Avenue intersection (intersection). The Traffic Division is
proposing to convert this area to a no parking at anytime area.
In April 2012, the Traffic Division conducted a traffic study and found that the subject
stalls were illegally used and when occupied, caused unnecessary congestion at the
intersection. Also, found in the study is that there are other stalls available throughout
the day along Mohouli Street.
In an effort to offset the loss of the three parking stalls, the Traffic Division will be
looking to add as many stalls as possible along Mohouli Street between Kilauea Avenue
and Kinoole Street.
